Cambridgeshire U18 Boys win EG Boys County Championships (Midland Qualifier)

Cambridgeshire U18 Boys win EG Boys County Championships (Midland Qualifier) at Overstone Park on 29th May 2024

Overstone Park Golf Club in Northamptonshire hosted the 2024 EG Boys County Championship Midland Qualifier. 60 of the very best Midlands U18 Boys were taking on the challenge of the course whilst representing their counties in teams of 6 players. The event which was played over 36-holes with the best 5 gross scores out of 6 scores per team for each round.
At the end of the mornings play, host county Northamptonshire held a narrow lead on an aggregate score of 367, with Cambridgeshire close behind on 371. The morning saw the best gross score by Sam Marshall of Cambridgeshire with a 68, this score being submitted to the Justin Rose/Telegraph Championship. The best morning nett was 67 by Oliver Penberthy from Northamptonshire, which is also submitted to the Justin Rose/Telegraph Championship.
So all to play for in the afternoon. As we came to the conclusion of the event it was looking as if Northamptonshire were going to get the win, however, Cambridgeshire had other thoughts, and when Sam Hewson 71 and Theo Morris 70 completed their rounds, with their high score of 85 dropping off it mean they moved into first place with an aggregate score of 736, narrowly beating Northamptonshire with 743.
This is the first time that Cambridgeshire have won the EG Boys County Championship Midlands Qualifier.
Joshua Gardner from Warwickshire produced two excellent rounds of 71/71 (total 142) to win the best gross 36-hole on the day, beating Sam Marshall 68/74 (142) on countback.
Congratulations to Cambridgeshire on qualifying to represent the Midlands region at the EG County Finals, which is to be played at Teignmouth GC from the 27th to 29th August. The whole of the Midlands region wishes the team good luck.
A big thank you to the players who played, all the county officials and supporters. Thanks must be given to Overstone Park GC for hosting the event.
