Lincolnshire Seniors add to their list of Senior League titles.
The Midland Senior League Play Off Final was won by Lincolnshire 10.5 to 7.5 at Coventry Golf Club. The course provided a good test for both teams and despite Lincolnshire taking a healthy 4.5 – 1.5 lead into the afternoon fourballs, it was a tight finish in the end with Shropshire & Herefordshire mounting a valiant fightback, however, two of Lincolnshire’s players holed some crucial putts late in the round to hold off the final challenge.
Lincolnshire secured some crucial wins in the morning foursomes with leading pair Tim Seaton & Paul Wharton putting the first points on the board with a 1 up victory. Colin Nolan & Mark Cooke halved with Damian Magill & Mike Jones. Andrew Watson & captain Jez Woodcock extended the lead with another 1 up victory. Keith Forster & Barry Ruddick reduce the lead for S&H with a 2&1 win but victories for Lincolnshire in the final two games of Kevin Blow & Darren Fuller and Mick Upton & Steve Toyne provided a 4.5 to 1.5 lead for Lincolnshire going into the afternoon fourballs.
Shropshire & Herefordshire started the fightback with Paul McGarry & Tony Cheese halving with Tim Seaton & Paul Wharton. Wins for Damian Magill & Mike Jones (3&2) and Darren Lewis & Chris Bufton (4&3) saw the tide starting to turn for the Midland Senior West League Champions. However, Colin Nolan & Mark Cooke holed some crucial putts late in their match to halve with Keith Forster & Barry Ruddick. A win for the West was still on the cards if their final two pairs could overturn the Lincolnshire players who were holding a lead going into the back nine. However, wins for Mike Cardy & Gary Neal (4&3) and Andrew Watson & Jez Woodcock (4&3) was sufficient to give Lincolnshire the 10.5 to 7.5 victory and the Play Off Final Trophy.
