The Southwest Counties Golf Association triumph over the Midland Golf Union Seniors at Remedy Oak finishing with a 9 – 6 victory in a closely fought match, played to a high standard on an impeccably presented course.
The morning foursomes were keenly contested with honours even at lunchtime with 2.5 points each. Wins for Kevin Blow & Darren Fuller and Steve Creed & Charles Banks gave hope of a mid-point lead, but the Midland Team were pegged back by the SWCGA team of Ian Veale & Simon Knowles and Jon Cowgill & Nick Barwood. The tied match between Rob Stevens & Dave Westwood for the MGU and Philip Ball & Gary Earl of the SWCGA kept the match on a knife edge.
The afternoon singles saw the tide starting to turn towards the SWCGA winning 5 out of the 10 matches and tying 3 more proved sufficient to secure a comfortable win, all be it with moderately narrow victories in each match. Steve Creed and Karl Smith were the only two outright wins for the MGU in the afternoon, with Steve Sansome, Duncan MacPherson and Rob Stevens all tying their matches.
The overall score of 9 to 6 to the SWCGA Seniors was a direct reversal of the score last season which hopefully will develop into a long-term fixture to follow in the footsteps of the Men’s team match running since 1927.
