MGU Seniors secure a win in their match against the SWCGA Seniors at Rothley Park Golf Club on 11th September 2024 to take a 2 to 1 lead in the annual fixture.
With heavy intermittent rain during the practice round on Tuesday both teams found the course long with limited run on the ball due to the constant saturation of the course over the past few weeks. Great credit goes to the club and the green staff for preparing the course to a high standard in challenging weather conditions.
The match started on Wednesday morning with heavy grey clouds looming and many groups set off in another heavy shower. The Midland side took an early lead in the foursomes with Steve Sansome & Paul Wharton, followed by Steve Creed & Richard Latham to register two home points. Warren Bladon & Rob Stevens finished all square quickly followed by another victory for the Midlands team in the shape of Darren Fuller & Tim Clarke. Graham Marshall & Paul McGarry were narrowly defeated to leave the Midland Team with a two-point advantage at the midway point.
The afternoon singles commenced again with heavy rain providing an additional challenge to all the players. The Midland Team forged ahead taking nine out of the ten games to register an impressive 12.5 points to 2.5 points victory. Whilst the margin of the win might be high, many of the games were extremely hard fought with a few hanging in the balance until late in the round. In the end, the home team held their early lead right through the singles matches to quell any fight back by the visitors.
Charles Banks (MGU Senior Captain) was notably proud of his players and their efforts to secure the win to make up for the defeat at the hands of the SWCGA Seniors 12 months earlier at Remedy Oak. Whilst the match has proved to be a keenly fought contest, the fixture also sees many players meeting up with fellow competitors from the National events and great friendships are renewed.
The 2025 match will be held at Coventry Hearsall Golf Club on 18th & 19th September which will see the Senior match being played alongside the annual Men’s fixture for the first time.
