Midland Golf Union

2020 Midland Youths Open Amateur Championship (RD1)

Wednesday 8th July 2020 - Stoke Rochford, White Tees

It is with extreme regret that the Midland Youths Championship on 7th to 10th July 2020 and the Midland U21 Girls Championship on 7th to 9th July 2020 at Stoke Rochford Golf Club have been cancelled. This is as a direct result of the government advice and England Golf guidelines, and in conjunction with the recommendations of our affiliated County Unions. There remains significant restrictions in place which would prevent us running the event safely.

This is in direct response to the COVID-19 virus and in an attempt to protect all players, officials and golf club staff against possible contamination or infection. The decision is not taken lightly but we must protect everyone involved in our events.

Whilst the contact out on the course is minimised to a certain extent, our concern would be gathering in the clubhouse and the availability of over-night accommodation for the players and families.

Cancellation of the events is in parallel with the action being taken by all of our County Unions and it is important that a united approach is being taken to hopefully reduce infection rates and ultimately avoid any unnecessary loss of life.

The Midland Golf Union are committed to providing a high-quality service to our County Unions and their players and we will do what is necessary to reduce the chances of spreading the virus.

Personally, I was hoping that we would be able to press ahead and provide a high-quality event, but the outside influences and impacts on the wider society are just too great to take the risk.

I have, in conjunction with the staff at Stoke Rochford, tried to explore alternative opportunities for us to reschedule the event later in the year but this has not been possible in light of the compressed nature of the season and significant clashes with other national and regional events.
