Staffordshire held off the challengers to win the Midland Region EG Senior County Championships.

Staffordshire held off the challengers to win the Midland Region EG Senior County Championships. Lincolnshire were just one shot back with Shropshire & Herefordshire in 3rd place.

With heavy rain over the weekend leading up to the competition, Sandwell Park was a green and lush and playing much longer than usual for early August. At the end of day one, Staffordshire on 369, were holding an 11-shot lead over Lincolnshire (380) with Warwickshire and Northamptonshire a further shot behind on 381. Nottinghamshire were in sight of the leaders on 383 along with Shropshire & Herefordshire and Derbyshire both on 384. Staffordshire’s Dave Westwood, with an opening 68 to set the pace. It remained the best score over the two days.

The second day started with light showers, but this didn’t dampen the desire of all the players to reduce the lead held by Staffordshire. With five from six scores counting, it was difficult to predict who was going to triumph at the end and with first five cards registered for each county, Shropshire & Herefordshire had leapt to the top of the leader board in front of Lincolnshire with day one leaders, Staffordshire in third. However, as the sixth player cards were entered Staffordshire returned to the top and despite a valiant effort by Kevin Blow of Lincolnshire a further twist didn’t materialize.

Staffordshire finished on 750 to qualify for the EG Senior County Finals to be held at Thorpeness Golf Club in October. Lincolnshire were second on 751, Shropshire & Herefordshire took third place on 762 and Warwickshire just one shot back on 763.

It was a double celebration for Staffordshire who are also in their Centenary year, so quite fitting they should reach a County Finals. Everyone in the Midland Golf Union wishes them well in the Finals.
