Andrew Haswell crowned Kymin Cup winner in the 2023 Midland Youths Open Amateur Championship.

Andrew Haswell crowned Kymin Cup winner in the 2023 Midland Youths Open Amateur Championship.

Andrew Haswell (Ormskirk) closed with a final round of 64 to complete a 6-stroke advantage over Thomas Stephens (Trevose) on 280, one ahead of Milan Reed (Long Ashton) and Charlie Box (Kirby Muxloe) on 281.

After the first two rounds Andrew Haswell and Charlie Box were tied on 138 (-2) with Henry Hayward (Kedleston Park) and Rio Saigal (Moor Park) just one shot off the pace on 139. Close behind on level par were George Cordall (Worksop), Milan Reed, Thomas Stephens and Jensen Forrester (Sutton Coldfield). Brandon Skidmore (Cotswold Hills) and Finn Lord (Royal St. Georges) on 142 completed the top ten going into the final two rounds.

By the end of the third round George Cordall had joined the mid-point leaders of Charlie Box and Andrew Haswell on level par. Rio Saigal and Thomas Stephens were still in touch just one shot back on 211 with Jenson Forrester on 212. Jake Sowden (The Oaks & Spa) and Frazer Jones (Kirby Muxloe) were also in contention on 214. Milan Reed slipped down the field with a 75 to nineth place tied with Dylan Hussey (Romford), Ryan Gavin (Coventry), and Owen Tweed (Willesley Park).

With the final round being played in baking heat, the pressure was on all the top ten players to keep their momentum going. The final round score of 64 by Andrew Haswell was sufficient to pull away from the rest of the field and hold off the challenging pack of Thomas Stephens (69), Milan Reed (66) and Charlie Box (71). Jake Sowden improved further with a closing 69 ahead of Frazer Jones with a final round 70. Rio Saigal slipped slightly with a 73 along as did George Cordall with a 75. Alex Emms (The Vale) made a late surge with a closing 66 leaving Ryan Gavin in tenth place with a final score of 287.

The Kirby Muxloe pair of Charlie Box (281) and Frazer Jones (284) finished first and second respectively in the U18 Bob Howell Trophy with Ryan Gavin (287) in third place. Dylan Hussey finished fourth on 288 and Brandon Skidmore just a shot further back for fifth place.

In the Andrew Hare Salver played over 18-Holes on Friday, Jadon Pham (Overstone Park) finished with 37 points, second place went to Kai Raymond (Peterborough Milton) on 35 points and Freddie Wilson (Ryal Winchester) on 34 points.

William Burbidge (Hollinwell) although missing the cut, was celebrating a hole-in-one on the par three 3rd hole in round 2.

The Midland Golf Union President, John Rawson, praised all players for supporting the competition, with many returning year after year to compete. He also thanked all the officers and officials at Stoke Rochford for their hard work supporting the Midland Golf Union staff during the week. Finally, he thanked Ping for their support and sponsorship of the event.
