Spooner retains Midland Boys Amateur title

Billy Spooner (Boston Golf Club) retained the Midland Boys Amateur Championship at Great Barr Golf Club on 3rd July 2014.

Billy Spooner successfully defended the Birmingham Post & Mail Challenge Cup won in 2013 and becomes the Midland Boys Amateur Champion for a second year. With a final score of 145 he edged out Conor White (Bridgnorth Golf Club) by a single stroke. Conor took the John Preston Memorial Trophy presented to the player with the lowest gross over 36 holes by a boy under 16 year of age on the day of the championship. Overall third place went to Oliver Farrell (Evesham Golf Club) on 147. Fourth was Billie Wright (Kenwick Park Golf Club) who headed three players on 148. Fifth place was Will Enefer (Wrekin Golf Club). Coby Cartwright (Cosby Golf Club) in sixth place just missed out of a prize on count back.

With many players getting caught up in the traffic jams on the approaches to the course their preparations and warm up schedules were obviously affected but in the end all the players managed to beat the traffic with some arriving only just in time to make their allotted tee time.

Billy Spooner carded a 74 in the morning with birdies at 1, 16 and 18 and improved in the afternoon to return a 71 which was just enough to head the field. Birdies at 1 and 7 along with an eagle at 15 obviously helped which helped to cancel out the double bogie at 14.

Conor White meanwhile had held a 2 shot lead over Billy in the morning with a 72 with birdies at 7, 14 and 15. However Conor struggled a little more in the afternoon and was disappointed with his 74 which included birdies at 7, 12, 14 and 15 but too many bogies and a double bogie at 9 was the undoing of his bid for the title.

Morning leader Benjamin Jones (Brampton Heath Golf Club) with a 71 tailed away with an indifferent performance in the afternoon. His round of 80 dropped him down for a share of 10th place overall.
