Worcestershire U18 Boys secured a deserved victory in the EG Boys County Championships (Midland Qualifying)

EG Boys County Championships (Midland Qualifying)

Worcestershire U18 Boys secured a deserved victory in the EG Boys County Championships (Midland Qualifying) at Kirby Muxloe with defending champions Leicestershire & Rutland finishing runners up.

On a day when most of the UK was bathed in sunshine, the competitors had to endure cold north easterly winds swirling round the course making scoring a real challenge. Hugh Adams (Worcestershire) and Harry McDonnell (Cambridgeshire) both carded a 67 in the morning with a further 5 players managing a level par round.

Worcestershire held an early lead after 18 holes with the best 5 scores leaving them 8 over par with Cambridgeshire in second place just a further 8 shots back and Leicestershire & Rutland a further 7 shots adrift. With two home players in the L&RGU team the morning lead held by Worcestershire was by no means safe. A 66 by Frazer Jones (L&RGU) in round 2, assisted by 72 and 73 for Thomas Dzuiba and Millan Durham respectively applied pressure on the leaders who benefitted from good second round scores by Hugh Adams (73) and James Illsley (71) Philipp Krone (73) and Mark Hewlett (74) all proving to be enough to extend the lead of the Worcestershire team, eventually finishing 15 shots clear of the Leicestershire & Rutland Boys. Lincolnshire improved from 5th to 3rd overall in the afternoon. Cambridgeshire slipped from 2nd to 4th followed by Nottinghamshire and Warwickshire in 5th and 6th respectively.

Best gross score of the day, and winner of the Arnold Quaich, was Frazer Jones (Leicestershire & Rutland) with a 5 under par total of 137, Hugh Adams (Worcestershire) 2nd on 140 and Ronnie Groves 3rd on 141.

Round one scores were used as a qualifier for the Justin Rose Telegraph Junior Golf Championships. Lowest gross was Hugh Adams (Worcestershire) beating Harry McDonnell (Cambridgeshire) on countback. Best net of the morning round was Harry Sherriff (Cambridgeshire) with a net 66.

Worcestershire will now represent the Midland Region in the EG Boys County Finals at John O’Gaunt Golf Club on 29th to 31st August 2023 and they go to the finals with the best wishes of the Midland Golf Union.
