Mark Betteridge (Coxmoor) wins the Midland Senior Spring Championship

Mark Betteridge (Coxmoor) wins the Midland Senior Spring Championship with a level par 73 on countback ahead of Charles Banks (Stanton-on-the-Wolds), both just a single stroke ahead the chasing pack of Nigel Chesters (Hawkstone Park), Chris Powell (Sherwood Forest) and Mark Scarrett (The Leicestershire) all on 74.

With a maximum field of 132 players starting at Coxmoor Golf Club at 8 o’clock it was almost 12 hours later when the last group returned to the clubhouse. Bright sunshine prevailed for the whole day, but a biting cool wind made scoring a challenge. Credit must go to Ben Cumberland and his team of green keepers for all their hard work to prepare the course to such a high standard so early in the season.

Chris Powell and Mark Scarrett had posted early scores of 74 and both remained at the top of the leaderboard for most of the day until the final few groups returned to the clubhouse to challenge the early leaders. Mark Betteridge eventually came out on top with a level par round, matched only by Charles Banks, losing out to Mark on countback. Nigel Chesters edged out Chris Powell and Mark Scarrett to take 3rd place. Paul Wharton (Woodhall Spa) returned a 75 for 6th place overall. Mark Illsley (Willesley Park) headed the group on 76 for 7th place. Edward Dunn (Peterborough Milton) finished 8th, James Feeney (Kedleston Park), Rob Stevens (Enville) and Graham Marshall (Birstall) finishing 9th, 10th, and 11th respectively.

Best nett score on the day was Edward Dunn (Peterborough Milton) with 67, followed by Mark Scarrett (The Leicestershire) on 69, matched by Ian Smith (Peterborough Milton), Alan Turton (Ullesthorpe Court) was 4th with a net 70, Paul Clarke (Kedleston Park) finished on net 72 followed by 7 players on net par (73) of Mark Illsley (Willesley Park), Neil Crees (Greetham Valley), Vic Morris (Hollinwell), Ian McCrae (Peterborough Milton), Paul Bracegirdle (Kibworth), Ian Harby (Newark) and Trevor Twelftree (Collingtree Park).

The Midland Senior Spring and the Midland Senior Autumn scores are combined for the Brian Morris Trophy for those over 65 years of age. Leaders are Charles Banks (73), Edward Dunn (76), Graham Coppen and Philip Gray both on 77. The second half of this element will be played at Blankney Golf Club on 14th September.
