The Midland Mid-Amateur Open Championship returned to Drayton Park on 17th May 2022 where Richard Sadler held off a strong field to take the title he won back in 2014. With a closing round of 69, matched also by previous champion Ross Overton. Both overcame Thomas Ryder who held the lead at the mid-point with an opening 69, however a closing 75 for Thomas relegated him to a creditable third place. Ben Woodward took fourth place with 146, a score shared with Darren Kirton (College Pines), Scott Armitage (John O’Gaunt) and Stephen Creed (Stratford-on-Avon).
Age division winners were:
Group A - Adrian Marshall (The Herefordshire)
Group B - Darren Kirton (College Pines)
Group C - Gordon Forster (Harpenden Common)
Group D - Mark Dunkley (Moseley)
Group E - Stephen Creed (Stratford-on-Avon)
The large greens proved to be a challenge for many and the moderate winds made scoring on some of the long holes a challenge. Fortunately all players were off the course when the heavy rains returned in the early evening.
A big thank you to all the staff at Drayton Park for providing an excellent venue for the championship and the green keepers in particular for presenting the course to a high standard.
