2016 Midland Youths Amateur Open Championship report
Reece Samson (Worksop Golf Club) gave a faultless display to win the Midland Youths Amateur Open Championship along with the Kymin Cup finishing on level par 280 for the 4 rounds. With a one over par 71 in the opening round in difficult weather conditions followed up by a 69 on day 2 and two rounds in level par helped to fend off the challenge of Nathan Fell (Lindrick Golf Club) on 283, although carding a final round of 68, it was too little too late to bridge the gap. Phil Tompkinson (Otley Golf Club) finished a shot further back on 284, with 5 more players on 285. These included Lewis Hinton (Foxhills Golf Club), Habebul Islam (Ipswich Golf Club), Benjamin Jones (Northamptonshire County Golf Club), Conor White (Bridgnorth Golf Club) and Jordan Boulton (Notts Golf Club). 4 more players followed up on 286 which included Sam Done (Kenwick Park Golf Club), Dan Taplin (Charterham Park), Sam Broadhurst (Atherstone Golf Club) and Midland Boys Amateur Champion Thomas Forster (Oundle Golf Club).
The Bob Howell Cup for Under 18’s was eventually won by Benjamin Jones after a 5 man play-off. Benjamin defeated Habebul Islam, Lewis Hinton, Conor White and Jordan Boulton at the first extra hole, a birdie securing the victory.
Conditions were tough throughout the 3 days with greens hard and fast and the rough very punishing for those who strayed off the tightly cut fairways. Midland Youths Champion Reece Samson managed to keep out of trouble for the four rounds and said in the end he was very pleased with his performance.
The Andrew Hare salver was won by Kieran Blundell (Olton Golf Club) with an impressive 68 to ward off the challenge of James Biggs (Diss Golf Club) on 70 with Joshua Bryan (Worcester Golf & Country Club) third on 71.
