Karl Smith (Handsworth Golf Club) wins 2016 Midland Mid Amateur Open Championship

Karl Smith (Handsworth Golf Club) wins 2016 Midland Mid Amateur Open Championship at Drayton Park Golf Club after dramatic play-off with former MGU Captain David Gibson (Cosby Golf Club)

Karl Smith (Handsworth Golf Club) had a nervous wait after carding rounds of 72 and 74 before a number of challengers fell short of his 146 total except for David Gibson (Cosby Golf Club) who finished with a 72 to tie for first place. However it was Karl’s accurate approach to the first green which finished within a few feet of the pin in the first extra hole of the play-off which helped him secure the title.

James Bishop (Little Aston Golf Club) finished a further shot back on 147 despite an opening 71. Richard Latham (Woodhall Spa Golf Club) was unable to improve his first round score of 74, finishing on 149. Richard Sadler (Moseley Golf Club) and Martin France (Lymm Golf Club) both carded a total of 150 to take 5th place.

Ross Overton (Sherwood Forest Golf Club) was the only player to break par with a second round of 70 to finish on 151 after a disappointing opening round of 81.

The Midland Mid Amateur Open Championship forms part of the Mid Amateur Tour and is a qualifying event for the Mid Amateur Tour Order of Merit.

The 2017 Midland Mid Amateur Open Championship will take place at Belton Park Golf Club (Lincolnshire) on Thursday 18th May 2017.
