2016 Midland Senior Amateur Championship report

Robert Aston (Trentham Park Golf Club) secures victory in the Midland Senior Amateur Championship at the Worcestershire Golf Club on Friday 22nd July 2016.

Finishing on 72 for a 1 over par total gave Robert a 2 shot cushion over local member Phil Dance and Charles Banks (Stanton-on-the-Wolds) who both recorded a 74 one shot clear of Alex Johnston (Llanymynech) and Craig pates (Moseley) on 75.

Robert said he was pleased with his performance and although dropped a couple of shots on the front nine managed to return with 3 birdies and a couple of bogies on the back nine to be sure of his win. This win also secures Roberts position at the top of the Midland Golf Union Senior order of merit table and with only one event left in that calendar victory is not guaranteed but looks fairly healthy.

The team club championship was won by The Worcestershire Golf Club with Phil Dance (74) and Mark Read (79) providing a 4 shot victory over Radcliffe-on-Trent pair Peter Higgins (78) and Robin Savage (79), with past winners Leek Golf Club, David Gallimore (83) and Duncan Stott (78) a further 4 strokes further back.

All the players were full of praise for the course conditions and although the greens proved to be a stern test for most with some very testing pin positions and tricky slopes making the putting and important part of a good score.

Course manager Steve Lloyd along with his team of green keepers, were praised for the preparation of the course. Difficult weather conditions leading up to the championship had meant special measures had to be employed but the final result was a testament to the hard work the team had put in on the course.
