Derbyshire Boys triumph

Derbyshire Under 18 Boys produced a gritty performance in the 2014 EG Boys County Championships - Midlands Qualifying event at a rain soaked Greetham Valley Golf Club on 28th May 2014.

With 5 scores to count it was important to maintain some consistency within the team and Derbyshire managed to do that although they were hard pressed by Lincolnshire who were just one shot behind in the end.

With heavy rain persisting all day scoring was always going to be a challenge, but the determination of the green keepers at Greetham Valley to keep the course payable ensured a full 36 holes was completed unlike the championship in 2013 which had been reduced to 18 holes. Leicestershire & Rutland set the early pace with 380 with Derbyshire just 4 shots behind thanks to the best morning round score of 70 (-2) for Bradley Moore. Northamptonshire were holding 3rd place on 388 and current title holders Staffordshire on 389, Nottinghamshire on 390 and eventual runners-up Lincolnshire on 392. With no improvement in the weather Derbyshire returned a creditable 377 for the afternoon round to finish on 761. Lincolnshire surged through the field with the best score of the day on 370 for the afternoon for a total of 762 just missing out by one shot. Leicestershire & Rutland faded with a 384 afternoon to finish on 764. Warwickshire matched Lincolnshire’s 370 afternoon score to finish on 766.

Best score of the afternoon was returned by Sam Done (Lincolnshire) with a 69 (-3) but the overall best gross over the 36 holes was maintained by Bradley Moore (Derbyshire) with an afternoon 73 to finish on 143 (-1) for the championship. This meant Bradley retained the Arnold Quaich which he won last year at Whittlebury Park.

To continue Bradley’s good form he has just won the 2014 Irish Boys Amateur Championship with Will Enefer (Wrekin) finishing in fifth place.
